‘Under the Ocean’ is an initiative ultimately seeking to ban plastic straws.

Welcome to my campaign. My name is Katharine Farrell and I am a university student from UNSW, Sydney Australia. I have always been passionate about animals and mankind impact on the environment, but now I’ve decided to do something about it. I always knew plastic waste was a problem, but I never realised just how much of a problem it was. The more I researched, the more I discovered, and the more passionate I became. Plastic waste is my focus, and straws are my chosen niche target in order to start tackling the larger problem. Banning plastic straws is achievable and realistic starting point, as there are already perfectly good eco-friendly alternatives. The next step would be to ban all plastic cutlery, cups and plates, and of course bags. Australia will get there, but not yet. We will tackle the problem of plastic waste bit by bit, as plastic pollution in marine areas is a problem the world can no longer ignore. Recent studies estimate that by 2050, the amount of plastic in the ocean will outweigh fish. Something has to be done.

Banning plastic straws could set a very needed precedent for the ban of more single use plastics, encourage manufacturers to seek cheaper ways to make biodegradable products, and, if nothing more, benefit the environment!

There are biodegradable, eco friendly options already in existence, so why are we choosing to ruin our planet?
